GOMBAK, 27 December: The International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) hosted its annual memorial lecture in honour of the late Professor Emeritus Dato’ Dr. Abdul Hamid Abu Sulayman on Tuesday, 17 December, 2024, at IIUM Gombak.
The lecture titled, “The Legacy of Visionary Scholarship: Honoring Professor Emeritus Dr. Abdul Hamid Abu Sulayman” commemorated the contributions of the former Rector of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). Vice-Chancellor of Riphah International University, Prof. Dr. Anis Ahmad, delivered the keynote address, while Dean of AHAS KIRKHS, Prof. Dr. Shukran Bin Abd Rahman, presented the opening remarks.
Remembering a Visionary Leader
The annual lecture highlighted Professor Emeritus Dr. Abdul Hamid’s lifelong dedication in reforming Islamic thought and education. As the second Rector of IIUM from 1989 to 1999, he played an important role in transforming the institution into a globally recognized university, nurturing over 15,000 students from diverse backgrounds.
“He dedicated ten years at IIUM to advance the vision of reforming the Islamic thought and education. His focus was on unifying Islamic knowledge with human sciences, believing this integration was key to addressing the crisis in the Muslim spirit,” said Prof. Dr. Anis during the event.
The Life and Legacy of Prof. AbdulHamid AbuSulayman
Born in 1936 in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, Professor Emeritus Dr. Abdul Hamid’s journey began with a Bachelor of Arts in Commerce and a Master’s in Political Science from Cairo University. He later earned a Ph.D. in International Relations from the University of Pennsylvania, building the foundation for his wide range of works in Islamic methodology.
His career covered several institutions, starting at King Saud University in Riyadh before he led the IIUM. His vision extended beyond administrative roles. He aspired to cultivate a generation of critical thinkers grounded in Qur’anic principles.
“His approach to education was holistic. He believed that moral and intellectual growth should go hand in hand, fostering individuals capable of addressing contemporary challenges without compromising their faith,” shared by the keynote speaker.
His personality
Professor Emeritus Dr. Abdul Hamid was not only known for his intellect but also humbleness and compassion. His leadership at IIUM was marked by efforts to create a harmonious environment that embraced students of all ethnicities and nationalities.
His contributions to Islamic Thought
A prominent figure of the Islamization of Knowledge, Professor Emeritus Dato’ Dr. Abdul Hamid attempted to realign contemporary education with Islamic principles. His works, such as,“Crisis in the Muslim Mind” and “Towards an Islamic Theory of International Relations,”, remain influential across academic circles globally.
As Chairperson of International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT), he led research addressing pressing issues facing the Muslim world, emphasizing the need for a refreshed intellectual framework based on Islamic teachings.
His Lasting Impact on Society
Professor Emeritus Dato’ Dr. Abdul Hamid’s contributions were recognized through numerous awards and honorary doctorates. His influence continues to shape IIUM’s curriculum and inspires scholars and students.
The memorial lecture not only honoured his legacy but also provided a platform to reflect on his sustaining impact on Islamic education and thought.
Through this event, IIUM celebrated the life of Professor Emeritus Dato’ Dr. Abdul Hamid, remembering his valuable message that knowledge, if guided by faith and ethics, has the power to transform societies.
