GOMBAK, 11 March 2017: The Election Commission (EC) is still studying new online system to register potential voters for General Election, according to Malaysias EC’s Assistant Director of Voter Education, Abdul Fatah Mohd Pilus.

He said that many aspects need to be considered before transforming any policy or system to ensure legitimacy and fairness during the General Election. The system must be able to verify each individual in terms of accuracy of registration.

œWe still study the new system by examining closely whether or not the system is suitable for implementing in Malaysia. There are other things that need to be viewed especially from a legal consideration and these are the reasons why we are not yet ready to implement the registration online system.”

Currently, the public can register as voters at State Electoral Office by bringing along their Identity Cards (IC) as proof of citizenship. For Malaysian citizens who live overseas, they can go to the Malaysian Embassy in capital cities to register themselves as voters.

œWe want to see the number of registered voters increasing before the coming General Election which is due next year, Abdul Fatah explained at the Voters Educational Talk at Main Audi in IIUM Gombak campus recently. ***
