THE directive for Malaysian employers to provide centralised accommodation with basic amenities before bringing their foreign workers into the country is long overdue. Employers must ensure that their foreign workers have acceptable housing, which means that it meets the minimum standards. The Cabinet Committee for Foreign Workers and Illegal Immigrants wants employers to provide humane living conditions to their employees, especially those in construction sites. It envisions long-term accommodation for these workers with basic facilities, such as beds and toilets, besides conveniences that many take for granted: grocery shops and places of worship.<\/p>\n
