The latest example is of artistic gymnast, Farah Ann Abdul Hadi, critiqued by the Islamic establishment for her standard-issue leotards as revealing of the aurat, an Islamic concept interpreted as the covering of the female form in a public space, varying in degree from modest to extremely conservative. It got to a point where one mufti even suggested that a fatwa be issued to ban Muslim women from sports, such as gymnastics and swimming, because of the attire. The athlete who did the country proud at the recent Sea Games has been the victim of cyber bullying since. Then, on Friday, she received a congratulatory note from the Sultan of Selangor with strong words of encouragement urging her on to greater heights.
