CONSTRUCTION is not an industry where fatalities and injuries are inevitable despite appearances. Scaffolding reaching up to the skies is a petrifying sight for the average onlooker, but workers are issued all manner of safety equipment and the sites safety secured. The law is in place to ensure that safety measures on construction sites are implemented. Unfortunately, despite it there have been numerous accidents causing fatalities and injuries: among them the collapse of the bridge being constructed in Penang which killed a member of the public; the MRT accident in the Klang Valley which took the lives of two workers; and, the latest now in Alor Gajah, Malacca, where the mezzanine floor of a hypermarket under construction collapsed. There were three fatalities and six injuries, three of them deemed serious. While nine victims were found, workers at the site said 15 people were beneath the collapsed structure. The accident was blamed on premature removal of the staging.<\/p>\n
