DISASTERS are never without knock-on effects. The same is true of the recent Sabah earthquake, which took lives, caused injuries and damage to the tune of millions. This last has a severity that will outlast the tragedy and cause more of the same in the event necessary action is not immediately taken to remedy the destruction. Of special urgency, to be addressed without delay, is the access to Mount Kinabalus slopes that has been cut off by the avalanche of boulders. This mountain, the tallest accessible in Southeast Asia, is a major tourist attraction for climbers and sightseers. Naturally, as part of Sabahs tourism industry, the mountain is a source of livelihood for many, especially the guides, these men and women who played a pivotal role in the search and rescue effort for stranded and lost climbers; heroes who risked life and limb to secure the safety of their charges.<\/p>\n
