{"id":74341,"date":"2015-05-14T14:03:51","date_gmt":"2015-05-14T06:03:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.iium.edu.my\/?p=74341"},"modified":"2015-05-14T23:37:24","modified_gmt":"2015-05-14T15:37:24","slug":"students-gain-exposure-on-gst-at-dialogue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.iium.edu.my\/?p=74341","title":{"rendered":"Students gain exposure on GST at dialogue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em>By Atiqah Ismail<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">GOMBAK, 14 MAY 2015: The Students Representative Council last night held a dialogue session on &#8216;GST: Between Economic Growth and Social Justice&#8217; at The\u00c2\u00a0Square, HS Building.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The speakers for the \u00c2\u00a0event were the CEO of\u00c2\u00a0Selangor State Economic Office who is also the Member of Parliament for Pandan, Rafizi Ramli, and Thinker Panelist of Jabatan Hal Ehwal Khas (JASA), Lokman Adam. The session was chaired by\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>Afiqah Zulkifli.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The event was intended to create an intellectual\u00c2\u00a0discussion between the students and the experts from the industry to promote<\/span>\u00c2\u00a0the culture of <em>&#8216;Iqra<\/em>\u00c2\u00a0among IIUM communities as suggested by the University.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The forum started with Lokman Adam giving an explanation on the fundamentals of Goods and Services Tax (GST). He stressed that the GST is a new type of government tax to replace the old &#8216;Sales and Services Tax&#8217; (SST) which can go as high as 20%. The GST can reduce the price of certain goods due to the lower percentage of tax consumption by companies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Meanwhile, Rafizi Ramli said that\u00c2\u00a0the introduction of GST as\u00c2\u00a0a consumption tax was based on the value-added tax (VAT) concept known to other countries, especially in Europe.
