{"id":184960,"date":"2025-08-18T05:09:32","date_gmt":"2025-08-18T05:09:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.iium.edu.my\/?p=184960"},"modified":"2025-08-20T04:06:39","modified_gmt":"2025-08-20T04:06:39","slug":"iium-scholarly-discussion-on-the-higher-objectives-of-islam-a-thematic-guide-to-maqa%e1%b9%a3id-halal-and-haram","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.iium.edu.my\/?p=184960","title":{"rendered":"IIUM Scholarly Discussion on &#8216;The Higher Objectives of Islam: A Thematic Guide to\u00a0Maq\u0101\u1e63id, Halal, and Haram&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em><strong>By, Belayet Hossen<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A\u00a0scholarly, interactive and fruitful\u00a0discussion\u00a0was accomplished\u00a0with Sheikh Dr. Haitham Al-Hadad,\u00a0(Chair, Fatwa\u00a0Committee, Islamic Council of Europe)\u00a0on &#8220;The Higher Objectives of Islam: A Thematic Guide to\u00a0<em>Maq<\/em><em>\u0101\u1e63<\/em><em>id<\/em>,\u00a0Halal and Haram,&#8221; which was held\u00a0on 25 July 2025, at al-Tabari Conference Room, Human Sciences Building, AHAS KIRKHS, IIUM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Program was honoured and officiated by Professor Dr. Hafiz Zakariya, respected Dean, AHAS KIRKHS, IIUM, moderated by Associate Professor Dr. Abdulhamid Mohamed Ali\u00a0Zaroum, and the emcee of the program was Associate Professor Dr. Shaheed Abdullahi\u00a0Busari\u00a0with the closing remarks\u00a0delivered\u00a0by Associate Professor Dr. Sayyed Mohamed Muhsin, respected Head, Department of Fiqh and\u00a0Us\u016bl\u00a0al-Fiqh.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his welcoming speech, Professor Dr. Hafiz Zakariya said\u00a0that\u00a0the issue of\u00a0<em>Maq\u0101\u1e63id<\/em><em>\u00a0al-<\/em><em>Shar<\/em><em>\u012b\u02bd<\/em><em>ah<\/em>\u00a0is crucial in the intellectual arena of this contemporary world. It is not only a burning issue among the scholars of Islamic world, but it also creates an intellectual discourse\u00a0and renaissance\u00a0among the scholars of western world. It has become now a global issue when discussing on the philosophy of Islamic law.\u00a0Muslim\u00a0scholars should pay more attention to\u00a0the\u00a0exploration of\u00a0the objectives of Islam and\u00a0to\u00a0integrate\u00a0them with all branches of\u00a0contemporary\u00a0knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However,\u00a0Sheikh\u00a0Dr. Haitham Al-Hadad\u00a0in his lecture\u00a0said\u00a0that\u00a0the\u00a0scholars of\u00a0Muslim\u00a0Ummah should think\u00a0that\u00a0today when\u00a0they are\u00a0teaching\u00a0their\u00a0students\u00a0in the name of Islamic Studies and\u00a0<em>Shar\u012b\u02bdah<\/em>\u00a0Studies\u00a0at schools, madrasahs\u00a0and universities;\u00a0are these teachings helping to rebuild\u00a0the\u00a0Ummah?\u00a0What is the role of scholars of the <em>Ummah<\/em>\u00a0today, when\u00a0people of Palestine are starving\u00a0with the lack of food and basic needs witnessed by the entire\u00a0Islamic world?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Haitham Al-Hadad\u00a0added that\u00a0we\u00a0should not remain in the context of the fourth century or fifth century of Islam to solve the current crises and problems of our Ummah. Rather, we\u00a0have to\u00a0study the texts written by our classical scholars from the perspective of\u00a0current\u00a0era. The understanding of context is heavily\u00a0significant\u00a0to comprehend Islam and its practice. If we always\u00a0remain\u00a0stuck\u00a0in the context of\u00a0those classical scholars, we will never be able to solve the problems that our Ummah faces today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On top of that,\u00a0he\u00a0further said\u00a0that\u00a0in this case,\u00a0the IIUM\u00a0has to\u00a0come forward and take the challenges\u00a0to resolve the crises that the Ummah is collectively facing\u00a0everywhere around the world.\u00a0It is crucial to know that the problems that we experience today, the scholars of classical period did not experience. They practiced the\u00a0<em>mut<\/em><em>\u016b<\/em><em>n<\/em>\u00a0of their period, but we\u00a0have to\u00a0practice the\u00a0<em>mut<\/em><em>\u016b<\/em><em>n<\/em>\u00a0based on our current\u00a0global context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He posed\u00a0some questions to the audience\u00a0regarding Islamic Studies:\u00a0Do\u00a0we teach them management sciences? Do we teach them social sciences? Don\u2019t they\u00a0need these kinds of knowledge? Do our\u00a0<em>f<\/em><em>uqaha<\/em> know Islamic banking and finance properly? Do they have enough knowledge on this vital issue? If they do not know then how they will solve the problems of our Ummah?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, Dr. Haitham\u00a0al-Hadad\u00a0mentioned that Islam is not a mere religion like what we see today. Rather,\u00a0once upon a time,\u00a0it was one of the superpowers of the world. Islam built the greatest civilization on earth.\u00a0Nevertheless, he opined that we should rethink about the notion of\u00a0<em>Maq\u0101\u1e63id<\/em><em>\u00a0al-<\/em><em>Shar\u012b\u02bdah<\/em>. The scholars of\u00a0<em>Maq\u0101\u1e63id<\/em><em>\u00a0al-<\/em><em>Shar\u012b\u02bdah<\/em>,\u00a0did they truly comprehend the\u00a0entire\u00a0concept? What are the objectives of Islam that Allah (SWT) expressed in His Quran? If we survey the\u00a0Quran,\u00a0we find\u00a0numerous\u00a0objectives\u00a0of\u00a0<em>Shar\u012b\u02bdah<\/em>\u00a0for instance:\u00a0worshipping Allah alone, establishing\u00a0justice on earth, testing\u00a0human beings\u00a0(<em>ibtil<\/em><em>\u0101<\/em>)\u00a0and making\u00a0Islam\u00a0victorious over other\u00a0all\u00a0religions\u00a0of the world\u00a0etc. Did our scholars of\u00a0<em>Maq\u0101\u1e63id<\/em><em>\u00a0al-<\/em><em>Shar\u012b\u02bdah<\/em>\u00a0mention these in their\u00a0Maq\u0101\u1e63idic\u00a0discourse? If the\u00a0<em>Maq\u0101\u1e63id<\/em><em>\u00a0al-<\/em><em>Shar\u012b\u02bdah<\/em>\u00a0is confined only to five\u00a0or more than this\u00a0specific\u00a0<em>k<\/em><em>ull<\/em><em>i<\/em><em>yy<\/em><em>\u0101<\/em><em>t<\/em>\u00a0then where is the\u00a0Maq\u0101\u1e63id\u00a0of justice (<em>\u02bd<\/em><em>adl<\/em>)? Where is the\u00a0<em>Maq\u0101\u1e63id<\/em>\u00a0of\u00a0<em>mak<\/em><em>\u0101<\/em><em>rim<\/em>\u00a0al-<em>Akhl<\/em><em>\u0101<\/em><em>q<\/em>, where\u00a0the\u00a0Prophet (SAW) said that he was sent to perfect the morality of\u00a0human beings? And where is the discourse of\u00a0<em>Maq\u0101\u1e63id<\/em><em>\u00a0al-<\/em><em>\u02bc<\/em><em>Am<\/em><em>\u0101<\/em><em>n<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Maq\u0101\u1e63id<\/em><em>\u00a0al-<\/em><em>\u1e6c<\/em><em>ah<\/em><em>\u0101<\/em><em>rah<\/em>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After his lecture, there was an interactive and engaging discussion among the participants. He\u00a0also\u00a0answered numerous questions coming from the participants, where\u00a0faculty members, master&#8217;s and PhD students were included. The active participation of audience in discussion with Dr. Haitham proves that the program was truly fruitful, mind-blowing and full of enlightenment.
