The Kulliyyah of Engineering, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), in collaboration with the ICSECO-IIUM Chair on Sustainable Engineering, successfully organized a one-day seminar on \u201cEthics for Sustainable Engineering\u201d on Friday, 9 May 2025, at Auditorium A, Kulliyyah of Engineering, IIUM Gombak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event brought together over 100 students enrolled in the GENE 4301\/4300 Engineering Ethics, Safety and Sustainability course, alongside industry professionals and academic staff. The seminar offered valuable insights into the critical intersection between engineering ethics, regulatory compliance, safety practices and sustainability in modern engineering. The distinguished speakers included Mr Sazali Ismail, Chartered Engineer (CEng) and Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (MIET), who serves as Principal Instrument & Control (Upstream)\/BPTA-1 at Petronas and Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr Ahmad Jazlan Bin Haja Mohideen of IIUM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The seminar featured three focused sessions, each addressing key areas critical to the engineering profession:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Engineering Law and Regulations \u2013 This session provided participants with a comprehensive overview of the legal frameworks that govern engineering practices in Malaysia. Discussions highlighted the importance of adhering to statutory requirements, professional codes, and licensing protocols to uphold public safety and integrity in infrastructure and design.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Safety and Risk Management in Engineering \u2013 Emphasizing the engineer\u2019s role in minimizing harm and ensuring safety across all project stages, this session covered risk assessment strategies, incident prevention, and the integration of safety culture in engineering operations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Pathway to Becoming a Professional Engineer (PEng) \u2013This session outlined the structured journey towards obtaining a Professional Engineer status. Topics included registration with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), required competencies, and the importance of lifelong learning and ethical practice in career development.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    The seminar served as an academic enrichment platform and also reinforced the Islamic values of accountability and stewardship, aligning with IIUM\u2019s mission to nurture engineers who serve humanity responsibly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
