GOMBAK, 8 December 2024: He began his journey at the IIUM in 2019 as an international student, stepping into a new world outside Gaza, Palestine for the first time. Adjusting to a new culture, learning English, and progressing through the foundation program to the Kulliyyah of Engineering (KOE) were challenging for him but nevertheless rewarding experiences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Along the way, I achieved significant milestones, including earning the Dean\u2019s List seven times and receiving the Rector\u2019s List with a CGPA of 3.65. These achievements reflect my hard work and the incredible support I received at the IIUM, which has shaped me both academically and personally,\u201d said Palestinian KOE graduand, Alqedra Amir I A who was conferred his degree in the seventh session of the 40th<\/sup> IIUM Convocation Ceremony on 19 November, at IIUM Gombak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alqedra said his biggest challenge when he was studying was learning in the English Language because Arabic is the mother tongue of Palestine and his native language. He said further, \u201cHowever, one of the most difficult struggles I faced was during the final year of my bachelor\u2019s degree when I lost my father to bombing on my home back in Gaza on 4 December 2023. This loss, along with knowing that my family in Gaza was still suffering, made that year incredibly hard.\u201d Despite the immense saddness he felt, he remained focused on his studies by finding strength in his family\u2019s memory and the desire to build a better future for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn addition, I also faced challenges with public speaking and presentations, but with continuous practice and resilience, I managed to overcome these obstacles as well,\u201d said Alqedra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy motivation has always been rooted in my family. My parents, especially my father, had been the foundation of my drive to succeed,” said Alqedra about his sources of motivation during his study. He realized that everything he does especially after his father\u2019s loss shapes the future for him and his family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amir\u2019s valuable lesson learned at IIUM is the importance of accepting different viewpoints because he realized that everyone has his or her own perspective and it is essential to remain open-minded and listen to others to improve his language proficiency. \u201cAnother key lesson is the importance of putting in consistent effort in gaining knowledge. To truly learn, you need to study diligently, review what you had learned every day, and take small steps towards your goal. As I always say, ‘Shoot for the moon. Even if you don\u2019t reach it, you will land among the stars.’ “This mindset had kept me motivated, knowing that persistence leads to progress, even when the path is difficult,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy advice to students who are struggling is to always put your trust in Allah\u2019s plan. Your optimal path is already laid out for you, and the key is to trust Allah and make dua. Keep your connection with Him strong, as He is the shelter in all difficulties. Beyond that, you need to take practical steps. Don\u2019t hesitate to reach out for help\u2014whether it\u2019s from your lecturers, friends, or anyone who can offer support. I\u2019ve been in situations where I had struggled, but seeking guidance from others and staying persistent helped me overcome those challenges. Remember, you\u2019re not alone, and asking for help is a powerful step towards success.\u201d A powerful advice from one of the graduands of the Kulliyyah of Engineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“My accomplishments have motivated me to continue studying further and to keep pushing forward. I am incredibly proud to be an engineer, and I look forward to using my skills to serve humanity, especially our Muslim Ummah<\/em>. My ultimate goal is to contribute to self-sufficiency and the progress of our nations, supporting the development of our communities in the name of Allah and in service to His religion, Islam.\u201d That is how he feel when he finally graduated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, Alqedra said in an exclusive IIUMToday interview, \u201cI would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to IIUM and to everyone who has supported me throughout my academic journey. I am honoured to be part of this university’s community, and I appreciate the recognition and encouragement I\u2019ve received. For all the current and future students of IIUM, remember that challenges are a part of the journey, but with persistence, faith, and hard work, success will follow. To all graduates, congratulations! This is just the beginning of an exciting chapter. Continue to pursue your dreams and make a positive impact on the world, especially for our Ummah and beyond.
