It certainly was not an easy passage for Dr. Izzuddin as he was juggling between two responsibilities; undertaking his PhD and lecturing in the Department of History and Civilization at the IIUM.

Dr. Izzuddin shared his insights in an exclusive interview with IIUMToday reflecting his determination in pursuing his PhD.

Dr. Izzuddin’s decision to pursue a PhD was deeply personal, driven by his profound belief in the power of history in shaping societal understanding. “History fascinates me because it is more than just a study of the past; it provides a framework for understanding the present and shaping the future,” he said. His fascination with the patterns and lessons of history drove him to investigate how historical narratives influence contemporary identities and conflicts.

Digging into his PhD research study on ‘British colonial policies and their influence on ethnic conflict in Peninsular Malaysia,’ Dr. Izzuddin explained its importance, “My research highlights the colonial origins of inter-ethnic tensions in Malaysia and investigated the long-term impacts of colonial governance. It bridges the gap between colonial studies and contemporary political discourse, offering lessons on addressing historical grievances to promote unity in post-colonial societies.”

As a lecturer and a student, Dr. Izzuddin described his experience as ‘rewarding but challenging.’ While his research study required full focus, teaching also demanded full attention to his students. He felt great fulfilment in the dual roles, which often intertwined in meaningful ways, despite the difficulties. “Engaging with my students provided fresh perspectives that inspired new ideas for my research,” he shared.

To the students pursuing higher studies while working as a lecturer, Dr. Izzuddin offered practical advice, “Meticulous planning, discipline, and prioritization of work are key. Seek guidance from mentors and peers, and always keep your ultimate goals in mind.” He also underlined the importance of self-care, stating that mental and physical well-being are vital for long-term success.

Reflecting his achievement of having a job and pursuing studies concurrently, Dr. Izzuddin acknowledged his quest for knowledge saying that his journey is endless. “History is vast and evolving; there is always more to explore—questions to ask, new archives to investigate, and new connections to make,” he said. With the passion for integrating Islamic perspectives into historical analysis, Dr. Izzuddin remains committed in contributing to the intellectual and social advancement of the Ummah.***

By, Daniya Afroz GOMBAK, 17 October 2024: The first session of the 40th IIUM Convocation Ceremony at IIUM Gombak witnessed the proud achievement of Dr.…

[1
[281
https://news.iium.edu.my/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/WhatsApp-Image-2024-11-17-at-11.59.08_2cbcbe41.jpg
