{"id":181261,"date":"2024-12-15T21:39:18","date_gmt":"2024-12-15T21:39:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.iium.edu.my\/?p=181261"},"modified":"2024-12-15T21:39:19","modified_gmt":"2024-12-15T21:39:19","slug":"yayasan-hasanah-sheds-light-on-the-evolution-of-malaysian-literature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.iium.edu.my\/?p=181261","title":{"rendered":"Yayasan Hasanah sheds light on the evolution of Malaysian literature"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>By, Shaireza Jaafar<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SHAH ALAM, 15 December 2024: Yayasan Hasanah, a foundation of Khazanah Nasional hosted an insightful event under the educational series named \u2018ILMU Hasanah,\u2019 titled, \u2018The Evolution of Malaysian Literature: From Traditions to Contemporary\u2019 on 12 November at Yayasan Hasanah, Shah Alam, Selangor.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two-hour event, held from 2 pm to 4 pm, explored the rich tapestry of Malaysian literature by distinguished speakers \u2014 namely, the first Malaysian National Female Laureate, known as \u201cSasterawan Negara,\u201d Datuk Dr. Zurinah Hassan, the author of \u2018The Sum of Our Follies,\u2019 Shih Li Kow, and the founder of the bookshop \u201cTintabudi,\u201d Nazir Harith Fadzilah \u2014 and was moderated by award-winning author and founder of the <em>Hikayat <\/em>fandom, Ninot Aziz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"755\" data-id=\"181263\" src=\"https:\/\/news.iium.edu.my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/photo_2024-11-17_13-01-17-1024x755.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-181263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.iium.edu.my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/photo_2024-11-17_13-01-17-1024x755.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/news.iium.edu.my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/photo_2024-11-17_13-01-17-300x221.jpg 300w, https:\/\/news.iium.edu.my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/photo_2024-11-17_13-01-17-768x566.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.iium.edu.my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/photo_2024-11-17_13-01-17.jpg 1170w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ninot Aziz asking Datuk Dr. Zurinah on her first encounter with literature<br>(Credit: Yayasan Hasanah)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The discussion first delve into the traditonal forms of Malaysian literature by Datuk Dr. Zurinah Hassan, where she recounted that her upbringing were mostly tied to the essence of literature, particularly oral literature. \u201cListening to <em>pantun<\/em> (poetries) from my mother as lullabies in which I vividly recall to this day. It was from there moments that I began to craft my own \u2018little verses\u2019 and learn the symbolism and other literary devices woven between the lines,\u201d she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs literature started to be documented, I began reading <em>Sejarah Melayu<\/em> (History of The Malays), including <em>Sulalatus Salatin<\/em> (The Malay Annals), <em>Puteri Gunung Ledang<\/em>, <em>Tun Teja<\/em>, and Malay homorous folk stories like <em>Pak Kaduk<\/em> and <em>Pak Pandir<\/em>.
