GOMBAK, 17 November 2024: Nurulhuda Khairani Binti Taupeack Kamal, a visually impaired graduand from IIUM’s Kulliyyah of Sustainable Development and Tourism and Contemporary Languages, was awarded the Amr Ibn Al-Jamuh Special Achievement Award (Co-Curricular) during the 40th IIUM Convocation Ceremony yesterday (16 November 2024).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an interview with Nurulhuda, she reflected her journey as a student with a disability. She credited IIUM\u2019s Disability Services Unit (DSU) for its exceptional support. “Programs organized by DSU had provided me with knowledge, I had a good circle of friends, and a strong support system,” she said. Nurulhuda also highlighted the importance of using facilities that cater to students with disabilities, such as accessible accommodations, that have helped her a lot during her study at the IIUM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, she did face challenges due to her visual impairment, but that did not stop her from achieving her goals. “I\u2019ve learned to adapt, and through DSU and other university programs, I\u2019ve gained confidence and felt special rather than insecure,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She highly encouraged students with disabilities to step out of their comfort zone and participate in more programs. “Joining activities not only helps build skills but also bridges the understanding between students with disabilities and others. It is a way to show that we are capable and deserving of every opportunity,” she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, her lecturers, friends, and family have been incredibly supportive. “My lecturers and friends have been incredibly supportive, both academically and emotionally. They had always been there for me whenever I faced difficulties due to my disability, they had been cheering me on and encouraging me to push forward,” she shared. Nurulhuda also paid tribute to her late father and her mother, who had been supporting her since childhood.<\/p>\n\n\n

Offering words of encouragement, she said, “If you have a goal, just go for it. Challenges are proof that you are capable. Even with a disability, Allah has given you the strength to succeed. Believe in that and never give up.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
