GOMBAK, 20 November 2024: There was a heartfelt moment in the sixth session of the 40th IIUM Convocation Ceremony on 19 November at IIUM Gombak. The parents of the late Mohd. Hani Bayhaqi bin Muhammad accepted his bachelor\u2019s degree in Architecture, on his behalf. The posthumous degree was presented to his parents in recognition of their son\u2019s academic dedication and significant contributions to the IIUM. His mother, Dr. Zuraini Denan, is an academic at the Kulliyyah of Architecture and Environmental Design (KAED),.

The late Hani Bayhaqi was more than just a student, he was a dynamic individual who left a lasting impression on everyone he had met. Known for his bubbly and extroverted personality, he was described as a ‘giver of life’ by his mother. A friend to all, his easy and friendly demeanour made him a cherished member of the IIUM family.

\u201cHani Bayhaqi was always full of energy and loved to make jokes. He wasn’t just a student, he was a brother, a son, and a friend to so many,\u201d shared his father, Muhammad Hafizi bin Hashim. His enthusiasm for life was evident in how actively he immersed himself in university activities by joining societies, playing volleyball, and even taking up the role as emcee.

Choosing to pursue architecture was a decision the late Hani Bayhaqi made independently, inspired by his parents but without their pressure. \u201cHe always said he wanted to carry on our legacy,\u201d Dr. Zuraini added with a smile. Hani also spoke about furthering his study at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in March 2025.

\u201cAs parents, receiving his degree was an emotional moment for us. We are deeply grateful for this honour,\u201d shared his father. \u201cHe struggled, but he never gave up. Congratulations, son,\u201d his father added.

Looking back, his parents found comfort in the memories of his joyful spirit. \u201cTowards the end (of his life), he truly lived. He enjoyed the company of his friends, went jungle trekking, played volleyball, he did whatever that made him happy,\u201d Dr. Zuraini reflected.

His father shared a heartfelt message for others, \u201cLife is short, do everything you want to do, as long as it aligns with the Qur’an and Hadith. Be happy, make lots of friends, and avoid making enemies.\u201d

As the convocation hall echoed with a big round of applause, it was clear that Hani Bayhaqi had left a permanent mark on the IIUM family. His personality as a bright, spirited, and inspiring individual will continue to resonate in the hearts of those who knew him.***
