{"id":161491,"date":"2022-01-08T16:12:30","date_gmt":"2022-01-08T16:12:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.iium.edu.my\/?p=161491"},"modified":"2022-01-08T16:35:08","modified_gmt":"2022-01-08T16:35:08","slug":"malaysias-machiavellian-politics-requires-a-shift-in-leadership-says-prof-kamal-hassan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.iium.edu.my\/?p=161491","title":{"rendered":"Malaysia&#8217;s Machiavellian politics requires a shift in leadership, says Prof. Kamal Hassan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>By Nurin Nazifa<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR, 9 January 2022: The author of \u0153Corruption and Hypocrisy in Malay-Muslim Politics: The Urgency of Moral Ethical Transformation\u009d, Prof. Emeritus Tan Sri Dr. Mohd Kamal Hassan, described the present political climate in Malaysia as Machiavellian, hence advocating for a new leadership paradigm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve been witnessing the country&#8217;s political growth over 70 years, and I think things are becoming worse,&#8221; Kamal stated on Awani&#8217;s \u02dcConsider This programme on Friday (7 January).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Muslim academic scholar conveys not only his deep disappointment but also a sense of shame, driven by his perception of severe moral decay in Malaysia&#8217;s politics and governance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kamal highlighted Malay nationalism as a role, saying that nationalists originally emerged intending to improve the Malays&#8217; economic situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, he claimed that Malay leaders have become increasingly corrupt as a result of the lack of discipline imposed by ethics and solid religious principles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u0153The political paradigm acquired from the British, which separated religion from politics, has resulted in the current situation, in which corruption and hypocrisy have taken root in the country&#8217;s governance,\u009d said Kamal.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kamal said he has also been noticing the double standards in which politicians say one thing in public and contradict it in private, ignoring promises made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u0153However, because this is a widespread practice, nationalist leaders are used to it.
