GOMBAK, 25 March 2021: How do you make yourself stand out amidst so many other candidates to grab the attention of your potential employer within the first few seconds? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A webinar organised by Practical Training Class (COMM 4995) on Wednesday (24 March) invited Mr. Hans Toh, Malaysias 1st<\/sup> Certified Professional Resume Writer and Interview Coach, to share some tips on how to write an outstanding r\u00c3\u00a9sum\u00c3\u00a9. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Hans Toh said: \u0153The most important thing is knowing how to present your soft skills, hard skills and your characteristics in a r\u00c3\u00a9sum\u00c3\u00a9. Give them a picture of what it is like working with you.\u009d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The speaker outlined the fundamentals of a r\u00c3\u00a9sum\u00c3\u00a9 that include the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Personal\ninformation \u201c This includes your name, home address, phone number, a formal e-mail\naddress and your age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Career\nprofile \u201c Describe your enthusiasm and passion towards the job that you want to\napply and an overall view of your hard skills, soft skills and what it is like\nto work with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Education \u201c Write your current level of education and your previous studies, starting from SPM and above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Working\nexperiences \u201c Write the name of the company, your position and an overview of\nwhat you did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Extra curriculum and volunteering activities \u201c Write your position, name of society or programme and explain how you contributed in that particular event\/society\/university. Activities during SPM, foundation and Diploma level are still acceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Skills\nand strengths \u201c List down your skills and give a brief explanation on how that\nskill applies to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Awards\nand recognition \u201c This includes all your achievements during your study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Hans Toh reminded students to use either UK or US English, synchronise the lines and spacing, use fonts such as Times New Roman, Garamond or Calibri size from 10 to 12 points, and avoid using bolds or caps locking in the entire paragraph. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In terms of layout, he said, it is best to use black and white or a maximum of one other colour in the r\u00c3\u00a9sum\u00c3\u00a9. Also, it must have a balance of white spaces and words to ease the reader to identify the points in the r\u00c3\u00a9sum\u00c3\u00a9. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some companies\nuse machines to read the r\u00c3\u00a9sum\u00c3\u00a9s so you should avoid using a fancy background, adding\nborders and tables as the machine will not be able to read it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are also some dos and donts that students should be aware of which are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Always change and customise your r\u00c3\u00a9sum\u00c3\u00a9 accordingly based on the job you want to apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Do not make\nup false information about yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Always double\ncheck to make sure there is no grammatical or spelling error.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Always provide\nthe full term of any acronym before using them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Your r\u00c3\u00a9sum\u00c3\u00a9\nshould not be more than two pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adding a\nphoto in your r\u00c3\u00a9sum\u00c3\u00a9 depends on the position you want to apply. It is not\nrequired most of the time. If you still insist, use a circle background for\nyour profile photo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is not\nnecessary to put your references in the r\u00c3\u00a9sum\u00c3\u00a9 because it is usually written in\nthe application form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As students they should do their best in developing themselves by joining programmes, societies, seek more knowledge and improve their skills for better opportunities in the future. ***<\/p>\n\n\n\n
