{"id":134616,"date":"2019-11-19T15:34:07","date_gmt":"2019-11-19T15:34:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.iium.edu.my\/?p=134616"},"modified":"2019-11-21T01:25:05","modified_gmt":"2019-11-21T01:25:05","slug":"celebrating-malaysian-culture-at-pr-fest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.iium.edu.my\/?p=134616","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating Malaysian culture at PR Fest"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>By Iylia Marsya Iskandar<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GOMBAK, 19 November 2019: IIUM as an international university should celebrate all international cultures especially the Malaysian culture as seen in the Public Relations Festival (PR Fest) that commenced on Monday (18 November) and ongoing until Thursday (21 November) in campus here, located at HS Square.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, the annual fund-raising event organised by the Institute of Public Relations Malaysia Student Association (IPRMSA) \u201c IIUM Chapter revolves around the theme \u0153Art and Culture\u009d with an emphasis on the Malaysian culture and <em>batik.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an interview with IIUMToday, the event&#8217;s programme manager, Muhammad Helmy Bin Jasri, said that the theme was chosen as there are already several cultural programmes being put forth from other societies in IIUM but there is a lack of exposure of the Malaysian culture to the international students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/news.iium.edu.my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_20191119_140116-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-134619\" srcset=\"https:\/\/news.iium.edu.my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_20191119_140116-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/news.iium.edu.my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IMG_20191119_140116-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He added, \u0153We specifically chose the <em>batik<\/em> as it is a traditional cloth that\nis being used in our everyday lives but the symbolism of the <em>batik <\/em>is what needs to be put as an\nemphasis.\u009d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elaborating, Helmy said, \u0153The process of making a batik is a lengthy one. It involves drawing, waxing and colouring to make it look lively. The process epitomises and puts weight on the richness of the Malaysian culture that needs to be exposed to international students.\u009d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The festival also puts forth other Malaysian culture such as the selling of traditional delicacies (<em>sagu gula Melaka <\/em>and<em> tauhu bergedil<\/em>) and an exhibition of cultural dances and traditional games (<em>gasing<\/em> <em>batu seremban, ceper <\/em>and <em>congkak<\/em>).
