{"id":132172,"date":"2019-10-10T00:49:44","date_gmt":"2019-10-10T00:49:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.iium.edu.my\/?p=132172"},"modified":"2019-10-10T00:49:46","modified_gmt":"2019-10-10T00:49:46","slug":"raising-awareness-on-mental-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.iium.edu.my\/?p=132172","title":{"rendered":"Raising awareness on mental health"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>By Aisyah Karina<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GOMBAK, 10 October 2019: A talk entitled \u0153Its Okay to Not Be Okay\u009d which highlighted the necessity of mental health awareness, was conducted at the Experimental Hall, IIUM on Tuesday (8 October). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organised by the Secretariat\nof Psychology (PSYCSTA), this event was held in conjunction with IIUM World\nMental Health Week 2019 (WMHW). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the opening\nspeech, the master of ceremony highlighted that \u0153Today, one in every four\npeople in the world will be affected by mental health in their life which shows\nthat this is becoming a serious issue that must be prevented.\u009d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The topic was\npresented by Miss Pamilia Lourdunathan, a clinical psychologist from IIUM who\nemphasized on the importance of opening up and seeking for help whenever\nsomeone is faced with problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She stated that not feeling okay does not indicate abnormality as everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses. However, those who are feeling down for two consecutive weeks may have depressive symptoms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Symptoms of depression<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Miss Pamilia\nrevealed that a person who suffers from depression may be identified through lack\nof sleep, skipping meals or excessive weight gain. They might also be\nsurrounded with thoughts of worthlessness, excessive guilt and having suicidal\nideation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She added that other\nsigns of depression are extreme fatigue and disliking the activities they used\nto enjoy doing. This disorder could be influenced by genetics or social factors\nsuch as having a traumatic experience from the past. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Seeking help<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Miss Pamilia also said in her speech that, \u0153Everyone has their excessive baggage, stories, that make us react in certain ways which take time to heal.\u009d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She claimed that\nthe most crucial thing when facing depression is that we must discover the root\ncause of our problems and share it with someone whom we trust. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u0153We should never have to go through it alone.
