THE material world is dictated by the Sciences. If humanity is to progress in whatever direction, be it space exploration, nano-, bio- and information and communications technology, science is in the forefront. It dominates the knowledge frontier. This is the measure of an advanced nation. But when the countrys education system is not producing the required number and quality of science students needed for the country to arrive at a magnificent future of astronauts, astrophysicists, rocket scientists, physicists, astronomers and every imaginable expertise, then, there is trouble brewing. Currently, the shortfall from the target of 60:40 in favour of the Sciences is of great concern. The school system is still swamped with Arts students. And, as nothing happens without a cause, reasons contributing to this sad state of affairs must be identified.
