GOMBAK, 14 August 2015: Two student leaders of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) were found guilty yesterday for organising a talk on Goods and Services Tax (GST) recently without approval from the university authorities and were suspended for two semesters with a stern warning.
The President of the Students Representative Council (SRC), Hanif Mahpa, and Afiqah Zulkifli acting as the Chairperson of Academic Secretariat and Intellectual of SRC had invited the Secretary-General of Peoples Justice Party (PKR), Rafizi Ramli into campus for a session on the tax issues on 13 May 2015 without the approval of the university.
The other speaker invited for the talk was Lokman Nor Adam, an official of Jabatan Hal Ehwal Khas (JASA) who is also an UMNO Youth Executive Council Member.Â
The forum was disapproved by the Chairman of Student Programme Approval Committee (SPAC) IIUM, Tuan Anuzi Nik Him as the invited speakers were not recommended by the university.
On 23 June 2015, Hanip and Afiqah received a letter from the Office of the Legal Adviser, IIUM and were charged under the Student Disciplinary Rules following the GST Forum.
Following the charges on 30 July 2015, Hanif and Afiqah attended their first hearing on the allegations of organising the event without proper approval from the university.Â
Hanif is a fourth-year student of the Kulliyyah of Economics and Management Sciences (KENMS) while Afiqah is a third-year student of the Kulliyyah of Architecture and Environmental Design (KAED).***
