Yangon must act responsibly

MALAYSIA, Indonesia and Thailand are facing a humanitarian dilemma. Rohingyas are fleeing Myanmar where they face political persecution and violence. They are non-persons in the land of their birth because the regime has simply turned around and declared them Bengalis for the simple fact that they are a religion apart. The majority Buddhist country is having trouble accepting a minority people and Yangon is turning a blind eye to violence amounting to genocide in Rakhine state where most of the minority Rohingyas live. That they are fleeing the violent persecution is no surprise. What is abominable about the situation is the exploitation of their plight by criminals, the human traffickers. With Thailands crackdown on the latter, boatloads of political refugees are abandoned on open seas with barely any supplies. However, the presence of Bangladeshis, who are economic migrants, among them is complicating the matter somewhat.
