THE water shortage issue in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya needs an urgent resolution. Unfortunately, it is being hampered by the skulduggery of small-minded politicians, especially the menteri besar of Selangor who allegedly is placing obstacles to the implementation of the Master Agreement (MA) arrived at between the previous Selangor administration and Putrajaya. Why urgent? Because, according to the executive chairman of Puncak Niaga Holdings Berhad, one of Selangors water concessionaires, there is a œlooming crisis. The water reserve is at a critical level at below five per cent. This could mean disaster if a drought strikes because ideally it should be above 15 per cent. While there is a solution, the Hybrid Off-River Augmentation System, this is not an alternative as it is dependent on ponds, which in turn need rain.
