DANGEROUS roads are caused by dangerous drivers. Malaysias roads are reputedly among the most dangerous in the world, and given that there are 1.5 million outstanding arrest warrants waiting to be served against errant drivers, the perception is more likely true rather than not. Of course, the offences in this respect vary, but it does not detract from the fact that the many road fatality figures registered annually indicate nothing less. These arrest warrants speak of wanting attitudes by drivers. For instance, a motorcyclist was recently jailed for disregarding numerous traffic summonses amounting to more than RM2,000. Harsh though this may seem, there is undoubtedly a need to show the public that police mean business: a traffic offence is no less significant than other crimes. The hurt to other road users is no different from injury inflicted during a robbery, for instance.
