“Let us face the Book”: Quran vs social media

By Mohd Najmi Md Zawawi

œDont ignore me, I miss you, please read me, I can bring you to the right path! I bet this will be the words of Quran if this Book of revelation can speak to us. Why do I say so? It is because nowadays, we used social media or applications that can make us get connected with our friends in our daily life.

Our smartphone has become our best friend as we carry this gadget anytime, anyplace. We chose to scoure the internet or social media in order to find information and chat with friends, and it can comfort us for the whole day. But do we really feel satisfied with the service provided by the internet or social media? I dont think so. Why? Because we forgot to bring along something that is more important for us, particularly to the Muslims, which is the Quran.

Quran contains many information and stories that can make ourselves reflect anything that happened in our daily life. We choose to chat with our friend if we have any problem to share but we forgot to read Quran and bring it everyday with us. But if we bring Quran everyday, Allah will provide us the solution without we noticing it. It occurred to me one time, when I was really depressed with assignments and daily problems. I didn’t have any idea what I should do at that time. I walked around the campus to find some inner peace, but its hard for me to get it. I walked around and passed by a mosque, and enter the mosque.

While in the mosque, Ive checked my bag to take out my assignment and my midterm paper, and I felt depressed with my marks, and I noticed a book, my blue Quranic tafseer book, and its been a long time for me for not reading this tafseer, and I opened the Quranic tafseer randomly, and I opened on the verse that taught us to be patient, and Allah always be with us. Allah will not test us something that we cannot carry, and Allah will not burden His servant. Ive read that verse and feel calm, even though I encountered many problems on that day.

It is proven that reading Quran can create inner peace in ourselves, rather than scouring the internet and spend most of our time with social media. The Quranic verses provide us with many solutions and information that we cannot get from the internet, yet people still choose the internet as a main source and forget to refer back to Quran.

Quran is not only a book that contains stories of the Prophet, it contains the cure to our heart and mind. Let’s  change our lifestyle by œfacing the book (the Quran), rather than spending time on œFacebook.
