THE revelation that Malaysian footballers earn astronomical salaries has invited numerous responses. While most coaches and officials are supportive of paying players huge salaries, the reaction from fans has been the opposite. Huge salaries, fans argue, should translate into a national team that is on a par with, if not the worlds, at least Asias best. Instead, Malaysia continues to struggle at the Southeast Asian level and the national Under-23 squad will head into Junes Sea Games in Singapore, not as favourites, but on an uncertain footing.
