GOMBAK, 5 April 2015: The 2014 IIUM Sports Award conferred Syazwan Muhsin Negara as the winner of Leadership Award 2014 organised by the Sports Development Centre recently.

IIUM Sports Awards have been organised every year by the centre to appreciate students who are active in sports and athletics, and they are awarded based on their participation and achievement at the national and international events.

This award consists of the following categories: Sportsman/Sportswoman Award, Most Promising Sportsman/Sportswoman Award, Full Colour Award, Half Colour Award, Sports Leadership Award and Best Team Award.

Syazwan Muhsin Negara said: œAt first when I received the invitation, I did not expect to get this award and more shocking before this. I just participated in sports activities to gain experience in handling the programme other than been selected to be former president of mahallah Uthman and representative of LAWSOC previously.

œBesides that, I want to do something outside the box and challenge myself because I am aware that I am not a good sportsman but I want to participate in activities I am interested in, but not all programmes that I joined I become a committee member. There were programmes that I just became the master of ceremony and as a reciter of dua but without these two things the ceremony is incomplete, right? By this award, I notice that the Sports Development Centre actually appreciated volunteers who have assisted them in the programme that had been organised, Syazwan said.

This award giving ceremony was also attended by IIUM Rector,  Prof. Dato’ Sri Dr. Zaleha Kamarudin and Director of Sports Development Centre, Noor Kefli Md.Sulong.

Syazwan said he was really inspired by the Directors speech because in his speech he said œto be an excellent person we need to act like a successful man.” He said “we should not be arrogant but to show we are excellent.”

œFor me, this is not only an inspiration to participate actively in organising the  programme but it can be applied in academic too. For example, if we want to get into the Dean’s list, we must act like one to achieve it, he said.

œIn my opinion, I would encourage for the award to be carried out in future because it would help motivate the athletes, even though they are not good sportsmen, to actively participate in organising sports activities and always offer themselves to join sports programmes,” Syazwan added.***
