TOMORROW it comes into effect. The Goods and Services Tax (GST) replaces the Sales and Services Tax (SST), and it will not only make tax collection more efficient, it will too, increase the countrys revenue. But, the year leading to its implementation has not been without problems, as fear, bred of ignorance and political mischief, got some people onto the streets in protest. When there was no reason not to understand, the middle classes whose exposure to information is in no dispute, the GST controversy took the shape of questioning what the increased revenue will be used for. Naturally, therefore, the authorities spent inordinate resources to educate the public as to how the GST operates and why the government has decided to implement what most other countries around the world have done for years.
