GOMBAK, 19 September 2014: Human science (HS) cafeteria in International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) has now officially been halal certified by Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia (JAKIM). The launching ceremony of the halal certified food outlet took place at the HS cafetaria itself and was officiated by Deputy Rector of Internationalisation & Industry and Community Relations, Prof. Dr. Abdel Aziz Berghout.

The Facilities, Food & Services Department first initiated this project in May 2013. The main objective of the project was to focus upon the process of acquiring halal certifications in smaller food outlets  before continuing on to the bigger food outlets that are situated in IIUM’s various mahallah residences.

Food operators from all food outlets in IIUM will undergo training in October this year to help face challenges such as improvement in infrastructure as well as how to deal with certain issues that can affect the health, hygiene and safety of their outlet.

Asked to comment on whether students should worry about their food being halal or not, Administrative Officer, Madam Haliza bt Hamzah said, “All food outlets in IIUM are halal. It is just a matter of justifying this with credited and strong certification as well as abiding by the correct procedures.”

The process also ensures that all standards and regulations are being met by the outlets including the safety and hygiene of all ingredients being used. All menus must also be registered in the system.
