GOMBAK, 29 May 2025: As part of Communication Festival 2025, a forum titled, “Being Muslim Online : Awareness Ethics and The Digital Footprint” was held on 29 May 2025 in HSC Seminar Room, HS Building.
The event featured distinguished guest speakers including Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Shafizan Mohamed, a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Communication, IIUM; Mr. Amin Idris, a well-known motivator and TV host; and Mr. Hafizul Faiz, the Founder of Tentang Kita, who shared their insights on the ethical responsibilities, challenges, and digital presence of Muslims in online space.
“You have to be a consistent Muslim wherever you are,” Assoc. Prof. Dr. Shafizan emphasized. She encouraged the Muslims to uphold Islamic values not only in physical spaces but also in the digital world, reminding the audience that online platforms are extensions of one’s identity and faith.
Amin also stated that Muslims must be change-makers by not allowing technology to control or change them. “We should follow in the footsteps of our renowned scholars such as Ibn Sina, Ibn Khaldun, and many others,” he added.
According to Hafizul, Muslims should practice self-control and avoid being easily distracted by social media. He emphasized the importance of being mindful of one’s online activities and reflecting on whether they align with Islamic principles.
At the end of the session, all panelists shared their advice with students on how to be good Muslims online. They concluded that consciousness and mindfulness are important aspects of being a Muslim in the digital space.
They stressed the need to consider the repercussions of one’s actions and to always question every step taken. Additionally, they encouraged striving to be inclusive Muslims by sharing valuable messages or da’wah in online content, rather than focusing solely on entertainment.
The forum ended with a Q&A session with the audience, followed by a token of appreciation presented to the panellists. It was organized by communication internship students and sponsored by Reskills, Baitul Nur, Mykori, and Mr. Karyadi.***
