436 PhD graduands receive scrolls in first session of IIUM’s 39th Convocation

GOMBAK, 25 November 2023: In the first session of the 39th IIUM Convocation Ceremony today, a total of 436 PhD graduands received their scrolls today, in various fields of study, at IIUM Gombak.

This year’s Convocation Ceremony will have nine sessions with 5,019 graduands altogether. It will be held for five days from Saturday, 25 November until Wednesday, 29 November 2023.

There will be several awards given, such as the Royal Education Award, the Best Overall Student Award, the Abdullah Ibn Ummi Maktum Award (Academic) and the Amr Ibn Al-Jamuh Special Achievement Award (Co-Curricular). The last two awards are given to graduands with disabilities who excel in their academics and co-curricular activities.

The Convocation Ceremony was officiated by the Constitutional Head of the IIUM, Her Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda Raja Permaisuri Agong, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah binti Almarhum Al-Mutawakkil Alallah Sultan Iskandar Al-Haj.

Her Majesty presented an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy in the field of Civil Engineering to former Penang City Council Mayor (MBPP), Datuk Seri Paduka Maimunah Mohd. Sharif, who was awarded for her services and efforts in contributing to the development and sustainability of the city. 

Following this, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohd Azmi Omar, Prof. Dato’ TPr. Dr. Mansor Ibrahim, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Koutoub Mustafa Sano, and Prof. Dr. Noraini Mohd Noor were awarded the titles of Professor Emeritus (for men) and Professor Emerita (for women).

In the same ceremony, the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) was honored with the Ibn Khaldun Merit Award for Global Social Transformation, for its contribution to the IIUM. 

The award was received by the Head of IsDB, Centre of Excellence in Kuala Lumpur, Mr. Samer Elesawi.***
