GOMBAK, 14 December 2022: To become a better version of oneself, one needs to keep improving, said Haifa Farzaana binti Chek Zainon, who is running for the Chairperson for Secretariat of English Language and Literature Society (ELITS) position in the Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences Student Society (IRKHSSS) Election.

In terms of experience in leadership, Haifa said that she has been the Head of ELITS’ Student Welfare Bureau and Public Relations Bureau, as well as IIUM UNESCO Club’s Assistant Media Manager and the President of IIUM Poetry Club.

To further understand her manifesto, as well as the reasons behind, IIUMToday managed to score an exclusive interview with the candidate.

The manifesto brought by Haifa included:

  1. Improve students’ communication skills.
  2. Expose students to professional settings.
  3. Encourage students to participate in collaborative works.

Haifa aimed to encourage students to voice their concerns more ethically and constructively because it will make sure their issues will be taken seriously.

Furthermore, she also wanted students to be further involved in collaborative work, which can help them improve not only their social skills but also their social connections.

Haifa mentioned that she has planned to hold a public speaking workshop twice a year and a seminar to prepare students for their internship, also known as an internship etiquette seminar.

“ELITS can do collaborative works with other English major societies in other universities,” she said in explaining that it can help SPELL OUT (BENL) students learn about other university students as well as to befriend them.

Haifa is running for the seat because she wanted to boost the morale of the BENL students which requires a union between the president and the rest of the society.

“A president is nothing when there is no unity, so, I aim to achieve that,” she said added that the result or the performance of others under them depends on the leadership shown by the leader.

Haifa also emphasised on the importance of character development to improve and become a better version of themselves to lead a much better and well-adjusted society.

The ELITS’ chairperson candidate added how she envisioned to create an environment for students to have open conversations and exchange opinions as part of their character development. ***
