GOMBAK, 11 December 2022: Nur Alya Irdina Binti Jefri from the Kulliyyah of Engineering (KOE) who was one of the recipients of the Best Student Award (Co-Curricular) expressed feeling blessed and grateful in her valedictorian speech at the eighth session at the 38th IIUM Convocation Ceremony on Wednesday (7 December).

Despite learning in the middle of a global pandemic, Nur Alya managed to clinch the best student title in co-curricular which not many can relate to.

She said she never got to fully experience IIUM as much as she should have like roaming the grounds, tasting every mahallah cafe shawarma, and many more.

“We even took online lab courses, conducting experiments on our laptop screens”, Nur Alya added.

“We almost did not make it here, but all’s well that ends well,” she said.

According to Nur Alya, “There will be more challenges no matter what path we choose after this, but we are ready to face them, thanks to you our parents.”

Nur Alya cited Surah Al-Anbiya verse 107 in her speech which translates, “We have sent you ‘O Prophet’ only as a mercy for the whole world” to which she related the concept of rahmatan lil alamin.

She urged all graduates to try and create the world that they desire, as they graduate and as they deal with excitement and doubt.

“Be the change that you want to see in the world. Your thoughts, your words, your actions, and the decisions that you make will lead you towards transforming the world into a better place to live in,” Nur Alya stated.

She mentioned a Hadith from Sahih Bukhari: 6021, in which Prophet Muhammad S.A.W said, “Every Act of Kindness is Charity.”

Nur Alya Irdina remarked that people can start their acts of kindness by thanking people. She asked other graduates to thank a person who has positively influenced their life and helped them in getting to the point they have reached today.

She ended her speech with a quote by Alvin Day, “If caterpillars can fly, so can you,” and congratulated graduates of the 38th IIUM Convocation Ceremony.***
