IIUM Rector says education is all about how it impacts the community

GOMBAK, 16 August 2022:  The value of education is not measured by how high your CGPA is but shall be seen through how deeply committed one is to bringing an impact by being beneficial to other people.

IIUM Rector, Prof. Emeritus Tan Sri Dzulkifli Abdul Razak, mentioned this in the sixth session of the 37th IIUM Convocation Ceremony held yesterday (15 August).

Reflecting on the past glory of Islam in Andalusia, the Rector encouraged graduates to reflect on the successes of Muslims during that era.

He stated that, even without modern technology, the vastness of Muslim knowledge allowed it to be disseminated across the globe.

“The golden age demonstrated how Muslims could use knowledge to make changes around the world,” he added.

Its spread was so significant that “it created another civilization which we now know as the European civilization, which is part of the civilization that we practice now,” he explained.

In addition, he mentioned that the scrolls the graduates received must motivate them to do something better.

“You have enough knowledge, but there is more to be learned, and I think you have the capacity to learn and I also think you have the skills and the way to look for knowledge. And you must use these to further your knowledge so you could contribute to the world at large.”

Following the Rector’s speech, 568 graduates from the Kulliyyah of Science (KOS) and the Kulliyyah of Nursing (KON) received their scrolls.

Six graduates received awards at the Kulliyyah level, namely Best Student (Overall), Best Student (Academic), and Best Student (Co-Curricular).
