Dr Robert Crane awarded Posthumous Honorary Doctorate at IIUM’s 37th Convocation Ceremony

GOMBAK, 14 August 2022: Former adviser to the President of the United States, the late Dr Robert Dickson Crane, was conferred with the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Civilization Dialogue as a recognition of his contributions towards humanity

The Honorary Doctorate was conferred by Her Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda Raja Permaisuri Agong, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah binti Almarhum Al-Mutawakkil Alallah Sultan Iskandar Al-Haj today on the occasion of the IIUM’s 37th Convocation Ceremony.

He was also known by his Muslim name, Faruq Abd Al Haqq, and was born in March 1929 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. He embraced Islam in 1980.

At the age of 16, he enrolled at Harvard University to pursue his study of the Russian language, and in 1948, he became the first American to be allowed to study at Münich University in occupied Germany.

He continued his studies at Northwestern University and later Harvard Law School and from 1983 to 1986, he held a position as the Director of Publicity at the Islamic Center of Washington.

The late Dr Robert was also recognized as one of the 500 most influential Muslims (The Muslim 500) under the category of Religious Administrative Affairs for the year 2020.

He was also an Islamic activist who had made many contributions, especially in the United States. In fact, he also produced a lot of Religious and Legal publications and received many invitations to international dialogue conferences.

A posthumous degree is a degree given to individuals who have passed away. Present at the IIUM Convocation Ceremony to receive the award on behalf of the late Dr Robert Dickson Crane was his son, John R. Crane.

Previously, the IIUM reached out to Dr Crane to award him the Honorary Doctorate in 2020, however, the conferment ceremony was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The IIUM community was saddened by the news of his passing on 12 December 2021, at the age of 92. We offer condolences to the family of the late Dr Robert Dickson Crane. Al-Fatihah.***
