GOMBAK, 18 March 2020: Tan Sri Dr. Mohd Daud Bakar has urged graduates to be functional to society, by using knowledge and skills acquired throughout their years of struggles and hardship in the university, to eventually make an impact on the world.

The IIUM President said this in his speech yesterday (17 March) at the 11th session of 36th Convocation Ceremony for graduates of AbdulHamid AbuSulayman Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences (AHAS KIRKHS).

“Make your life, your work, your struggle meaningful, purposeful, functional and impactful.

“Think hard and think systematically. You are here in the university to study essentially how to think,” he said emphasising the use of mindset as a powerful weapon to dictate everything.

He told the graduates that employers are looking for the quality of thinking more than the quality to memorise or reproduce what you have learned. Therefore, he called on the graduates to “take all big things with a serious contemplation and to think hard”.

“Train yourself how to think properly and constructively. There are many issues in life that need more serious and deep as well as critical and holistic thinking to be in sync with the shariah,” he said.

The President also stressed on the big roles played by parents that help their children to achieve success. He considered parents as the unsung heroes.

“In today’s celebration, students might think that they are the hero, though the parents are actually the true, unsung heroes.

“Parents are the source of success for their child. They put hopes for the remedy in their children’s hands rather than the poison. When exam comes, their hands would be raised to the sky asking for Allah’s blessings for the good of the child more than themselves.

“Their caring and loving nature has no limits and they expect nothing in return,” Dr. Mohd Daud Bakar said.

The President urged the graduates to lower their wings to them as they have put them under their wings for so long, ***
