Prof. Kamal Hassan appointed IKIM Chairman

GOMBAK, 25 February 2022: Former IIUM Rector, Prof. Emeritus Tan Sri Dr. Mohd. Kamal Hassan has been appointed Chairman of the Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (Institut Kefahaman Islam Malaysia or IKIM) effective today, according to Bernama report.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs), Senator Datuk Idris Ahmad, described Prof. Mohd Kamal as an Islamic thinker who has made significant contributions to the academia, research, education, and human capital development.

“I am pleased to say that Prime Minister, Dato’ Sri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has agreed to the appointment of Prof. Tan Sri Dr. Mohd Kamal Hassan as IKIM chairman and Datuk Wan Mohamad Sheikh Abdul Aziz as deputy chairman,” Idris said in a statement here today.

Prof. Mohd Kamal, 79, was born in Pasir Mas, Kelantan, and graduated with a Bachelor of Islamic Studies from the University of Malaya in 1965, followed by a Masters and Doctor of Philosophy from Columbia University in New York in 1975.

He served as Rector of IIUM from 1999 to 2006, as well as chairman of the Islamic Religious Education Coordination and Advisory Board (LEPAI), a board established with the consent of the Conference of Rulers, and was named senior professor for his contributions to the academia.***
