KUALA LUMPUR, 5 February 2022: COVID-19 infection numbers continue rising in Malaysia, with 9,117 new cases reported today, up from 7,324 cases yesterday.

The last time new cases breached the 9,000-case mark was on 8 October 2021 with 9,751 cases.

Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said, in a tweet, that this brings the cumulative number of COVID-19 infections in the country to 2,904,131 since the pandemic began.

Meanwhile, Health Ministry, Khairy Jamaluddin said new COVID-19 cases in the country are expected to rise sharply in the next few weeks.

“It was based on the high infection rate from the current Omicron variant wave,” he said in his tweet yesterday.

Two days ago, Khairy said that the severity of COVID-19 cases in Malaysia is currently its prime concern following the emergence of the Omicron variant rather than the number of daily infections.***
