“Ambang Merdeka Light Garden 2021” brings back the spirit of Independence

GOMBAK, 31 August 2021: Although the celebration of Malaysia’s Independence Day is not as festive as before to adapt with the new norm of COVID-19, IIUM still celebrates the national day with cultural activities on “Ambang Merdeka Light Garden 2021.”

The event which started at 11.00 p.m yesterday (30 August) was celebrated with various cultural activities such as poem recitation by the Rector of IIUM, Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Dato’ Dzulkifli Abdul Razak and the Deputy Rector (Student Development and Community Engagement), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zulkifli Hasan, mini poem competition among principals of female mahallah and patriotic song singing session by the principals of male mahallah with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zulkifli.

These cultural activities were held to cultivate the spirit of unity among Malaysians with hope that they could arouse the spirit of resilience against COVID-19.

The Rector said it is a historic moment as Malaysia has gone through a new form of colonisation which is COVID-19. Hence, “Ambang Medeka Light Garden 2021” is a new form to raise the spirit of Independence to ensure that all IIUM communities and Malaysians can celebrate the occasion.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Rector (Student Development and Community Engagement), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zulkifli in his speech said, “These cultural activities are important as they can cultivate the patriotism feelings and love towards the country by performing during the celebration to remember the beauty of our culture and history.” 

“Through ‘Ambang Merdeka Light Garden 2021’, it shows that the IIUM community is still eager to celebrate Independence Day even in the midst of the pandemic, and through this celebration, it can foster unity among Malaysians,” he added. 

Dr. Zulkifli ended his speech reciting a few paragraphs of poems that expressed his feelings of gratitude towards Malaysia’s freedom fighters and wished Happy 64th year of Independent Day.

The poem is as follow:

Membawa teman hendak ke pekan,

Segak manis tetapi pemalu,

Sambutan kemerdekaan kami nanti-nantikan,

Menghayati perjuangan generasi terdahulu.

Merbok berlagu merdu bersuara,

Leka seketika umpama perindu,

Sambil menunggu berdebar jiwa,

Sambut merdeka norma baharu.

Besides the poem recital from Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zulkifli, all principals from female mahallah conducted a mini poem competition among them, the context of which is mostly focused on facts about the Independence Day and Malaysia.

Meanwhile, the principals of male mahallah along with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zulkifli performed a patriotic song called “Warisan” from Sudirman, of which the song often mentioned that we are the legacy that will continue the tradition from our forefathers.
