Paralympics Tokyo: Powerlifter Jong Yee Khie wins silver medal for Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, 30 August 2021: National powerlifting athlete, Jong Yee Khie wins a silver medal for Malaysia in the men’s 107 kilogrammes (kg) category at the Tokyo International Forum today. 

The 32-year-old Sarawakian is placed second behind the Mongolian athlete, Sodnompiljee Enkhbayar with a new Paralympic record of 245kg and ahead of Saman Razi from Iran who did 231kg. 

Yee Khie powered his way to secure the silver medal with his best lift of 237kg in his second attempt. 

By securing second place, Yee Khie has shown a major improvement after finishing seventh place in the 97kg category at the Rio 2016 Paralympics.  

This is Malaysia’s second medal, both won by the powerlifting sport after Bonnie Bunyau Gustin who competed in the men’s 72kg category made history by winning Malaysia’s first Paralympic gold medal last Saturday (28 August). ***
