Student Union Townhall 3.0

By Tuan Nurul Iffah Binti Tuan Ismail

GOMBAK, 28 February 2020 – In the light of reforms towards a new system in selecting Kulliyyah’s student leaders, the Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences Students’ Society (IRKHSSS) will conduct its first Kulliyyah-level election on 12 March this year.

The new system is objectively to replace the Syura system which was hitherto practised by IRKHSSS since its establishment in 2014.

This election is extremely important to become the benchmark as the first Kulliyyah-level election in the Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences (KIRKHS). In regard to this, several pre-election programmes will be conducted by IRKHSSS with assistance from the university’s administration.

All students are highly encouraged to participate in these programmes in order to revive and enliven a healthy campus political culture in the Kulliyyah.

With that, the Student Union Townhall 3.0 was specially brought by Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences (KIRKHS) in collaboration with the Student Union (IIUMSU) to give students a clear picture of the system as well as to introduce what the Student Union is and how it works for the benefit of the students.

The Townhall was held at HS Seminar Room, Level 5 HS Building.

During the Townhall, the representatives from both sides presented the outlines as well as explained what has been and will be ahead of the upcoming election. From Student Union, it was represented by Idayu Mumtaz, the EXCO for education and audit IIUMSU, and Eusoff Fitri Sarnin as the IRKHSSS caretaker Deputy President.

IIUM Student Union was established in 2019 and officiated by former Minister of Education, Dr. Maszlee Malik in a very spectacular and grand launching ceremony on 5 September 2019.

Currently, IIUM Student Union is managed by Student Union Protem Committee (SUPC) to prepare for the upcoming elections. IIUM Student Union is objectively to replace the former Student Representative Council into a more autonomous, efficient and effective student body in an effort to strengthen student activism and empowerment.

With the IIUM Student Union system, clubs and societies organised activities and events will no longer require university office approval; student programmes will be managed and approved by IIUMSU itself. The IIUM Student Union is also partnering with such companies as GamesMy and PayLah.

It has become one of their main goals to withhold the credibility of the university; there is no need to be ambiguous and quiet about any of their schemes with the money flows and their action plan being clear to the university. The demand for a student-based governing body flagged off in February 2019 when over 1,000 IIUM students were attending the IIUM Student Union Townhall regarding the body’s establishment plan.

The Townhall also introduced the Election Commission (EC) for KIRKHS by-election as follows:
