Kuala Lumpur, 13 June 2014: About 600 IIUM alumni from all over the world attended the Gala Dinner held for the first time here. In attendance were the Minister of Youth and Sports, Khairy Jamaluddin, President of International Islamic University Malaysia, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Utama Dr. Rais Bin Yatim, and the Rector, Prof Dato Seri Zaleha Kamaruddin.
“It is not an easy task to bring all the alumni from all over the world to come back to IIUM,” said Khairy Jamaluddin.”
“Malaysia has been able to provide quality education thus attracting foreign students to come here for their tertiary education,” he added.
The objectives of the event are to create global relations with all the alumni around the world, to engage more chapters in other countries, and also to create more business chances for the alumni,” said Prof. Dr. Abdelaziz Berghout the Deputy Rector of Internationalization & Industry and Community Relation, who is chairman of the Organising Committee.
Among those who attended the Gala Dinner were the Minister of State For Foreign Affairs Guinea, Dr. Sano Qutb Mustafa, the Menteri Besar of Perak, Dato Seri Diraja Dr. Zambry Abdul Kadir, Deputy Minister of Islamic Affairs Maldives, Aishath Muneeza and many other prominent figures.
Some of the alumni are now serving their community and countries with high and respected positions, one of them is Dr. Abd Aziz, who came all the way from Nigeria. He was one of the student from Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Law. He said that this kind of event should be continued in the future because it provides opportunities for the alumni to meet their old friends of whom they had lost contact with.
Also happened that night was the launching of the IIUM Coffee Table book as well as the Alumni Awards of Prominence ceremony. The awards were conferred upon alumni who have risen in prominence in their nation and have continued to serve the Ummah.
There were three categories of award; Distinction, Leadership and Public Service as well as Corporate and Entrepreneurial Services Alumni Awards. Among the recipients include former Inspector General of the Royal Malaysian Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar, Dato’ Seri Dr. Zambry Abdul Kadir, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Koutoub Moustapha Sano as well as Professor Dato’ Sri Dr. Zaleha Kamaruddin.
The guests were entertained with remarkable performances by the IIUM Andeka Caklempong as well as Farid Sanullah who sang one of his hit song entitled “Don’t Forget Allah”. Tonight was one of those memorable nights especially for the university and will remarkably go down into the memories lanes of many.
