Tan Sri Sanusi Junid, a leader and ‘father’ of IIUM dies

GOMBAK, 9 March 2018: Tan Sri Sanusi Junid who was former President of IIUM passed away this morning. He was 75. He served IIUM for eight years from 2000 until 2008.

At the opening ceremony of ‘Wadi Budi’ this morning which began with the recitation of Al-Fatihah for the late Tan Sri Sanusi Junid, IIUM President, Tan Sri Dr. Rais Yatim said, “Although he had retired over a decade ago, his role in this university had given much impact with his effort for activating the company’s corporate energy in getting a viable site for IIUM.”

The President was full of praise of the late Tan Sri Sanusi Junid whom he described was ahead of his time, an intellect, and an avid book lover.

Tan Sri Sanusi’s long political career in public service began at the age of 31, when he was elected the Jerai Member of Parliament. Later he also won the Jerlun parliamentary seat in the 1982 general election.

He served as National and Rural Development Minister in 1981 and Agriculture Minister in 1986 before being appointed Kedah Menteri Besar from 1996 to 1999. He also earlier served as Deputy Home Minister from 1980 to 1981.

He passed away at his home in Pantai Dalam this morning, and his body was taken to the Saidina Umar Al-Khattab Mosque in Bukit Damansara for prayers, before he was laid to rest at the Bukit Kiara Muslim cemetery later in the afternoon. ***
