GOMBAK, 11 November 2017: Siti Aisyah binti Mohd Ramli who graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery was conferred the Royal Education Award at the first session of IIUM’s 33rd Convocation ceremony today for her outstanding performance in academic and co-curricular activities.
She received the award from the President of IIUM, Tan Sri Dr. Rais Yatim, along with an honorary co-winner, Muhammad Adli bin Amirullah, from the Kulliyyah of Economics and Management Sciences.
The award specially sponsored by the Conference of Rulers (Majlis Raja-Raja) is conferred to Malaysian students who have shown outstanding achievement in their undergraduate programme.
In accepting the award, Aisyah said she owed her success to two individuals in her life who stood relentlessly behind her in difficult and trying times – her parents.
Aisyah confessed, “I was just 18 when I first seriously expressed my intention to study medicine. Although my mother was a big supporter of my dream, my father, due to his deep love and affection for me, had some reservations.”
“My dad was worried that his daughter would be spending the next 40 years of her life confined within the four walls of the hospital, that she’d be too busy with on-calls that she won’t have time for herself.”
Despite the adversities that came from entering such a demanding field as medicine, with full confidence Aisyah proudly stated that she had successfully made it through.
“With the grace of Allah, with my mother’s unwavering support, complimented by my dad’s words of wisdom and encouragement, here I am standing in front of you giving this speech,” she shared.
