GOMBAK, 4 October 2017 – World Teachers’ Day which falls on Thursday (5 October) is a day to be celebrated to show appreciation towards lecturers and teachers.

In conjunction with this auspicious day, the Institute of Public Relations Malaysia Student Association (IPRMSA) – IIUM Chapter held a programme for four days starting Monday until Thursday where a booth was set up at HS Square, Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences, to sell roses to the campus community.

This event gave an opportunity for students to buy roses and present them to their lecturers as a display of appreciation and respect for their lecturers. Apart from that the event was also intended to raise funds for the association.

Head of the programme, Azanis Shahila Aman said, “They are our lecturers, who teach us tirelessly. Many people think that being a lecturer is an easy task, but people do not understand their commitment, passion and sincere intention to educate the students.”

“Therefore, why not spend one day to show our appreciation and love to our lecturers. This event will motivate students to remember the contribution of their teachers and lecturers.”

Azanis added that the association decided to pick roses as a gift because “teachers are very special people whereby they consummate the responsibility and dedication towards future generations”.

Roses symbolise love and appreciation to the person, so it is suitable to either male or female lecturers.

“I really hope that our programme will continue in future where we are not only selling roses, but other things of souvenir nature as well, to show some kind of respect and appreciation.”

“Maybe we can create a big proper event, a festival, just for World Teacher’s Day, and I think IIUM should celebrate this day because we are an international university, so we need to support this day because this is a worldwide event,” Azanis said.

The appreciation gifts are red and pink roses sold at RM4.00 per rose, but for three petals of roses it is sold at a discounted price of RM10.00. This IPRMSA booth will be open until Thursday (5 October) at HS Square, from 9.00 am until 5.00 pm. Delivery services are also provided for those who need it.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) established World Teachers’ Day on 5 October 1994 and since then the day has been celebrated each year in many parts of the world. This year, it came up with the slogan “Teaching in Freedom, Empowering Teachers.” France hosted the celebration this year on 5 October. ***
