GOMBAK, 9 May 2017: IIUM won third place in the 9th National Dental Students’ Scientific Conference (NDSSC) which was organised by Penang International Dental College (PIDC) from 6 until 7 May.
A total of 28 dental students from the Kulliyyah of Dentistry (KOD) participated in the competitions including oral presentation, poster presentation, wire bending competition, creative calligraphy, soap carving competition, dental quiz competition, and talent show competition.
According to Deputy Dean (Student Affairs), Prof. Dr. Noorhazayti Abdul Halim, the aims of KOD for sending the students at NDSSC was to inculcate research interest among dental students, thus to increase their communication and critical thinking skills while presenting their own research.
Among the competitions, IIUM won first place in creative calligraphy, while for dental quiz and talent show, it received second place for both categories, and for online photography third place. It was competing with 12 other universities in Malaysia, including University of Malaya, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia, SEGI University, Melaka Manipal Medical College, Aimst University, Penang International Dental College, International Medical University, Lincoln University, and Mahsa University.
According to Dr. Noorhazayti, in the last 8th NDSSC 2016, IIUM was awarded the overall winner. Unfortunately, they were unable to maintain as a winner for this time around.
“Even though they got third place this year, the dental students were giving their level best to win the competitions. I can see their effort and spirit to strive for excellence, said Dr. Noorhazayti.
The Kulliyyah of Dentistry is grateful to have a chance and support from IIUM for the dental students’ research and other dental related talents at the national level competition, and Dr. Noorhazayti hopes that they will hold champion for next year’s event. ***
