Malays and their origins that exist long time ago

GOMBAK, 5 April 2017: A talk entitled “Malay: The Origins and its DNA” took place at the Experimental Hall yesterday under the guidance of The Secretariat of History and Civilisation (HISTFORIUM) with the collaboration of the Malaysian Historical Society.

The talk was given by Zaharah Sulaiman, the writer of ‘Asal Usul Melayu Induknya di Benua Sunda’.

She said, “Many western writers claimed that Malays did not exist, however, based on the study, Malays actually existed since a long time ago.”

“Based on my study, the origin of Malays is not only located in Malaysia, Malays were actually located in other parts of the world, such as Madagascar, the Philippines, Hawaii and others based on their DNA and they shared the same characteristics with us,” she added.

She also mentioned that the reasons why Malays are not located at the same place is because of the biggest ever volcanic eruption that had happened in Indonesia, called Toba which had almost caused the extinction of human population among our ancestors.

The Toba super volcanic eruption happened around 75,000 years ago, at the site recently known as Lake Toba.

“According to the study, those who survived had migrated to other parts of the world,” she emphasised.

Zaharah also stated that the Malays had previously excelled in trading. They were not colonising others but they were only engaged for the sake of trading.

According to her, the Malays before this owned lands, being blessed with gold, but now, Malays have nothing.

“We have been suppressed for a long period of time, and for us to compete back, in my opinion, it will take some time,” she concluded.

The objective of this event is to bring back the Malay identity, according to the programme manager, Aida Zulaikha Zulkefly. “If we know our existence, we’ll appreciate more towards ourselves and create great future,” she said.***
