GOMBAK, 26 January 2017: IIUM Rector, Prof. Dato’ Sri Dr. Zaleha Kamarudin today outlined the academic direction of the university at the first Al-Liqa’ al-Jamaie assembly for 2017.

In her address at the assembly, Prof. Zaleha began by highlighting the success of IIUM in 2016. She spoke on the continued prominence of the university’s English language debating team in many international-level debating competitions.

“The unique brand of IIUM Islamic-based quality higher education has gained positive reputation globally that its curriculum is being exported and duplicated in other countries like Afghanistan, India and Maldives,” she said.

She, however, cautioned that “the success that IIUM has achieved should not go over the heads of the staff since there is much work that needed to be done to make IIUM a truly premier international Islamic university”.

She later outlined key areas that will be the focus of the university to sustain IIUM’s past success and to chart new ones. These areas are Islamisation, good governance, research and innovation, holistic student development, teaching and learning, talent management, financial sustainability, campus sustainability, and information & communication technology.

She added, “Since academic excellence is crucial to IIUM’s brand, the academic staff will be assessed using the Key Ihsan Indications (KII’s) where their teaching, supervision, research, publication and consultancy will be employed to measure their productivity towards meeting the aspirations of IIUM.”

She concluded her address urging all staff to double up their efforts in their respective capacity for the benefit of the ummah and the world.

The assembly is a monthly event for academic and administrative staff of IIUM where the Rector presents to the staff current developments in the university. ***
