IIUM wins Great Gender Royal Debate

GOMBAK, 22 November 2016 – The International Islamic University Malaysia A (IIUM A) was crowned as the winner of The Great Gender Royal Debate Championship 2016 in Malay category.

Muhamad Shahrul Nizam and Nur Anisatul Ashikin Abd Rauf  as the closing government (proposition) with the motion Dewan Ini Mencadangkan agar Kesaksamaan Gender Dijadikan Agenda Kerjasama Serantau won over participants from three other universities – Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).

Nur Anisatul Ashikin from IIUM was announced as the best speaker for final round.

In addition, Muhamad Shahrul Nizam said, “We were already trained for a month and the factor that contributed to this victory. In last year’s competition, IIUM teams only managed to get second and third places, so this year we want this trophy. Alhamdulillah we managed it.”

On the other hand, Taylor University A emerged as the champion in English category after beating Asian Pacific University, Taylor University B and IIUM in the epic final round. Amrit Agastia from Taylor University A secured the title for the best speaker.

Organised by Majlis Debat Universiti Malaysia ( MADUM) in collaboration with Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development, Ministry of Higher Education and NAM Institute for the Empowerment of Women (NIEW), The Great Gender Royal Debate Championship 2016 was held from 18 until 21 November at IIUM campus in Gombak and was participated by 166 teams from various higher learning institutions and two teams from Philippines and Vietnam respectively.

The closing ceremony was officiated by Deputy Minister of Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development, Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun. ***
