GOMBAK, 6 November 2016: The Sultan of Pahang, Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah, today expressed his appreciation towards IIUM for establishing itself as a Premier Islamic Research University.

He exhorted it is important that the university remains relevant in line with its aspiration to produce quality Muslims concurrent with the situation of the local and global ummah since its establishment 33 years ago.

“Notwithstanding this change, the aspirations of the university have remained the same which are to produce quality Muslims who are able to improve the state of the ummah and spread goodwill and harmony within and beyond the Muslim world.

“I am proud and happy to follow the success of IIUM, from its physical growth to its academic expansion, from a university of high local standing to one with a significant international reputation,” he said at the first session of the 32nd IIUM Convocation ceremony earlier this morning.

Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah, who is also IIUM’s Constitutional Head said that since education and knowledge are fundamental to the development of ummah, it is only appropriate that enough funding be provided to the university.

“These funds are needed to carry out, develop and expand the university’s academic and student activities.”

“Other than getting the regular funding from the government, there should also be contributions from local and international Muslim philanthropists and thus be part of IIUM success stories,” said the Sultan.

He hoped that IIUM would be seen as a true model of Muslim ummah as it is able to show that its community can live in peace and harmony as well as unity in diversity.

“Let’s bring this model of unity where ever you go and bring peace and development to every corner of this world,” he said.

The ceremony also saw the conferment of title of Professor Emeritus to two former IIUM deputy rectors namely Prof. Dato’ Wira Dr. Haji Jamil bin Haji Osman and Prof. Dato’ Dr. Md Tahir bin Md Azhar.

Prof. Dato’ Wira Dr. Jamil Osman was the Deputy Rector (Academic Management and Admission Division) from 1999 until 2003, while Prof. Dato’ Dr. Md Tahir bin Md Azhar held the position of Deputy Rector (Academic Affairs Division) from 2008 until 2015.

Prof. Dr. Jamil specialised in Islamic Banking and Finance and had been the Deputy Dean of the Kulliyah of Economics and Management Sciences while Prof. Dr. Tahir had his education in medicine and was once the director of IIUM’s Kuantan campus where the Kulliyah of Medicine is located.

Also attending the convocation ceremony were the Sultanah of Pahang, Sultanah Kalsom, the Menteri Besar of Pahang, Dato’ Seri Adnan Yaakob, IIUM President, Tan Sri Dr. Rais Yatim, and the Rector, Prof. Dato’ Seri Dr. Zaleha Kamarudin.

A total of 4992 graduates will be receiving their scrolls throughout the six sessions of the three-day convocation which began today that include degrees at the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), masters and bachelor.***
