IIUM Mustangs going for the win

GOMBAK, 10 October 2016: Decked in their jerseys, the IIUM Mustangs, on 8 October, at 3.00 p.m, were headed to the Kejohanan Olahraga & Renang Majlis Sukan Universiti Malaysia 2016 held at Sports Complex, Sultan Azlan Shah campus, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) in Tajung Malim, Perak.

The 18-member team included two coaches, a swimming team consisting of six people and a team assistant. Also with the team are a liaison officer and a female officer.

This championship will be held from 7 to 9 October and the IIUM Mustangs will go head to head against 19 other teams from other public universities in Malaysia.

According to the athletics and swimming team, they are aiming for three medals each, and are not specifying their medals towards any particular colour. Nonetheless, they are definitely aiming for the best.

The events lined-up for the athletic team includes the 100m, 200m, 400m sprint, 800m, 1500m run, 3000m steeplechase (men’s only), 4x100m, 4x400m, long jump, triple jump, javelin, discus throw, high jump and 10km walking event (men’s only). On the other hand, for the swimming team, they are taking part in freestyle 1500m, 800m, 400m, 200m, 100m and 50m event, as well as the 50m and 100m butterfly, 4×200 and 4×100 freestyle relay, 50m backstroke and 50m breast stroke.

When questioned on hopes and aspirations, a representative of the athletics team, Aiman Fauzi, from AIKOL, a second-year first semester student said that he aims for a medal in the 400m run and a newly improved personal record. He was set to be running for the 400m and 4x400m event.

Furthermore, the captain of the athletics team, Amin Mustaqim bin Che Azmi, in his third year and second semester from ENGIN, Automotive, is expecting six medals from the whole team as an overall, for the new members to qualify for the finals, for every single member of the team to give his or her very best and beat their own personal record, and for himself, to be on the podium.

On top of that, captain of the swimming team, Ahmad Lukman bin Johari, also expressed the hope that his team can take home three medals and that he can beat his own record and bring home a medal of his own.***
